Bike Montco

Bike Montco logo
Montgomery County is creating a new bicycle mobility plan, Bike Montco, which will enhance the county’s efforts to advance bike and pedestrian mobility. The new plan, which will be developed using a Transportation and Community Development Initiative (TCDI) grant from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC), will include design improvements and key policies for bicycle safety. Bike Montco will fully address the current bicycle needs of the county by examining existing conditions and will also look at bicycling destinations and preferred routes and the countywide bicycle network utilizing state, county, and local roads, and trails.

The plan will focus on four specific types of bicycling opportunities—safe bicycle routes to parks and trails, bicycle mobility in towns, biking to transit, and biking near colleges and high schools. Design recommendations will address bicycle lanes, trail standards, bike friendly roadway design, bicycle storage facilities/destination amenities, bicycle signage, and street crossing design. Bike Montco will achieve a major goal of the county’s new comprehensive plan, Montco 2040: A Shared Vision. That goal is to improve bicycle access to provide more transportation choices, improve health, and create better community connections to make the county more appealing for young workers, and to improve the environment by reducing vehicle miles traveled.

public participation

The plan was created through public input and a steering committee. Over 2,000 people provided input by completing our survey, and we received hundreds of comments on our user-friendly online map. The survey and map offered opportunities for the public to tell us their biking habits, where they like to bike in the county, obstacles or barriers that prevent them from riding safely, and their opinion on how to make biking safer and which routes they would like to see improved. The public was also invited to view the draft plan and comment on the plan.

Public EVENTS

June 20, 2018

Bike Montco - Building a Bike-Friendly Montgomery County
Over 50 people attended this free public event at the Montgomery County Communtity College in Blue Bell. During this event, the draft Bike Montco plan was released. Several speakers shared the content of the plan and topics including building safer on-road bicycle infrastructure, linking to the county's trail network, and the role the county can play in providing bicyclist safety education and encouragement strategies for new riders. Attendees also had  an opportunity to take a brief tour of Morris Road, one of the study areas in the plan, and to hear about the plan's recommendations to improve bicycle safety at the community college.

May 23 and May 24, 2017

Public Workshops
MCPC offered two public workshops as part of the development of Bike Montco. The workshops, which took place on May 23, 2017 in Skippack Township and May 24, 2017 in Upper Dublin Township, gave participants an opportunity to share their experiences of biking in Montgomery County and to suggest opportunities for improvement. The workshop featured an online map, interactive posters, a survey, and a comment area.
