| About The Trail |
|
The
Wissahickon Green Ribbon Trail is a nearly 20 mile long trail that
starts in the City of Philadelphia at the confluence of the Wissahickon
Creek and the Schuylkill River (at the Schuylkill River Trail in
Manayunk) and ends in Upper Gwynedd Township in Montgomery County.
The Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association has established
easements and have built and maintained a walking path for much of that
distance. In the Lower
segment of that trail, the Montgomery County will be improving the
existing dirt walking path so that it is available for use
year-‘round, including the installation of a wider, more substantial
stone/cinder surface. A
part of the Trail will be paved between Northwestern Avenue and along
Stenton Avenue. For
more information on the existing walking path, please visit the
Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association web site at www.wvwa.org The Lower Wissahickon Green Ribbon Trail, designated as that area between Fort Washington and Philadelphia at Northwestern Avenue, will be the only area that will receive development attention as a multi use path. (please see New Trail Development in this web site) Development of this section is important to the County because it will make the connection to the very popular Fairmount Park Trail, the “Forbidden Drive” in Chestnut Hill and will connect directly to another Montgomery County Trail, the Cross County Trail in Fort Washington State Park. Both the Wissahickon Green Ribbon Trail and the Cross County Trail will then connect to the Existing Schuylkill River Trail in Conshohocken and in Manayunk for a 30 mile loop as early as year 2007. |
