Springfield Township was established in 1703 and was settled primarily by English, Welsh, and German settlers. The earliest industries in the township were farming and milling. Farm products were taken into Philadelphia and sold. Many historic sites such as old mills and large homes have been well preserved as a reminder of the township’s long history. Today, Springfield Township is almost entirely residential, comprised of single family houses on lots of relatively moderate size. The township is considered a pleasant and historic place to live. Communities within the township include Erdenheim, Wyndmoor, Oreland, Enfield, and Flourtown.
