JENKINTOWN
|
![]() Jenkintown Borough was incorporated on December 8, 1874. The land, which consisted of 248 acres, was taken from Abington Township. Jenkintown started modernizing early after its inception, which included an impressive business district and beautiful homes. Today, the borough continues to promote its downtown office and commercial areas. The older original housing is well maintained, which adds to the small town flavor of this community. It should be noted that many businesses and residents have a Jenkintown mailing address but are actually located in the surrounding Townships of Abington or Cheltenham.
PUBLIC SERVICES:The entire borough is serviced by public water and sewer facilities. A full-time police force serves the borough. Fire protection is provided by volunteer companies. Residential trash disposal is provided by the borough through contracted haulers.
RECREATION:The local school district facilities are available to residents. These include tennis courts, soccer fields, baseball fields, a peewee field and three gymnasiums. The Jenkintown Youth Organization runs various Little League programs. For more information on what is available, please contact 215-885-0700.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION:SEPTA bus and rail lines make this small town seem large. Jenkintown is easily accessible to surrounding communities in Montgomery County, Lower Bucks County, and Philadelphia.
SHOPPING:A large main street shopping area with many specialty shops make up the downtown. The nearest major shopping malls are the Cheltenham Square Mall and the Willow Grove Park Mall.
