Becoming a Foster Parent

Requirements for Being a Foster Parent / Home
Becoming a foster parent is easier than you think. Basic foster parent requirements:
  • Be willing to participate in pre-service foster parent training
  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Have a home or apartment that meets basic standards as set forth by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare (DPW)
  • Provide a positive physical and emotional environment for children
  • Can be:
    • Married or single
    • Working parents or stay-at-home parents

Pre-service Foster Parent Training
Foster parents are urgently needed for sibling groups, teens, and minority children. In order to become approved as a foster parent, you must attend one (1) orientation class and all three (3) of the pre-service foster parent training classes in a session.
