The Mercury Containing and Battery Management Act of 1996 phased out the use of mercury in traditional household (alkaline) batteries. Because of this, these batteries are deemed ‘safe’ to throw in the trash by the Pennsylvania DEP. However, this does not mean that these types of batteries can’t be recycled.
